Thanks for the alert, Charlie.

And again we see that mysterious box behind the cab.

I'm just seeing a blue box with a '?' instead of the photo.

I don't think you can link individual images with a URL on AMMS Brisbane - internally the site uses JQuery and AJAX which means each page is built

with small pieces of HTML code which are loaded in on demand.

I agree there is an odd box behind the driver's position - I'll ask Mike Etzel (the AWM technology curator) whether he knows anything about this addition.

Regards,

Charlie

I guess the box is a one-off field modification, I have not seen other Mark IV pictures with one of these.

It also must be quite narrow, sitting between the right track and the silencer mounting. Length seems to go up to the first T-Girder on the roof... confuse

Does photo "Mark_IV 80" show anything interesting? That one doesn't show when I go to the webpage.

 Charlie

Thanks for this link.  If making enquiries, would you also ask whether he knows why it is that the air outlet louvres on this tank point down when they usually point upwards?  Thank you.

No - that's my mistake - thanks for pointing it out - fixed now.

Charlie

It's possible the box is an alternative petrol tank installed so as to give a gravity feed to the engine. Such a thing might have been needed if the Autovac had failed whilst in Australia and it couldn't be repaired locally.

Perhaps, but would it be wise to site a fuel tank there? I wouldn't have thought so, being so near the hot exhaust silencer!

Well, there's a hot exhaust running the whole length of the roof, and a petrol tank needs to be above the engine unless you have a pump -and if you had you'd fix the autovac. Also no-one was throwing hot lead about so that wasn't a consideration, and if you were that concerned about health and safety you wouldn't go anywhere near a WW1 tank!

I had a reply from Mike Etzel, technology curator at the AWM. Short answer - "doesn't know".

Charlie

Spare fuel tank, or replacement fuel tank sounds good. Maybe you could ask the curator if the fuel pump is working?
