Renault FT 66260

Gentlemen,

I have just acquired a photo of a Renault FT where the serial number 66260 is clearly discernible on the rear left side of the tank. I was wondering if we have a similar reference to French tank serials as we have on the British ones?

I would attach a photo to this post however every time I submit a post with photographs it gets labelled as possible spam and gets shelved.

scroll down to Camo and markings... 66000 is Renault, 66260 makes it fairly early production I think...

Never had a problem with"spam" images if your using links give a name to the link using the chain button in the postbox menu and add your link that way

I thought the number "66260" was familiar - when I saw the reverse side of the postcard in your Flikr album was in German.....tada!

Rainer Strasheim says in his Beutetanks book that 66260 was captured at Chemin des Dames on 31 May 1918. It had been

operated by AS (Artillerie Special) 305. 66260 was sent to Berlin and was filmed negotiating trenches in September 1918 - ultimate fate is unknown.

Bonsoir,

I am sorry for Rainer Strasheim, but the Renault FT n° 66260 captured at Chemin des Dames on 31 May 1918 was impossible !

The French tanks were used, North-East of Soissons in September 1918  (Chemin des Dames Sector) :

                 - 31 August / 3 September 1918,  between Ferme de La Perričre, Crouy, Bucy-le-Long.

                 - 14 to 17 September 1918, between Nanteuil-la-Fosse, Sancy, Celles-sur-Aisne, Vailly.

The Renault FT n° 66260 was well a tank from AS 305 (2° BCL/501° RAS), fighting on 31 May 1918 near Chaudun (South-West from Soissons).

Four tanks stay in German linies and the 66260, was just knocked down in a hole, 300 m South-East of Chaudun.

It was the only one not burnt or destroyed.

I know this photo and try to found the farm, rear the tank, for a long time . . . .  Michel

Thank-you Michel, I was hoping you would take a look at this one.

As you say, how frustrating for Herr Strasheim, to be corrected AFTER your book has been published. That must be the nightmare of all authors.
