As promised in the "Mks I to V - variations" thread, here is a very early draft of a guide to the differences. This draft only covers the Mk I, and the diagrams are also early draft (as noted in the text). The references I am using (so far) are "British Mark I Tank 1916", "The German A7V Tank" (for the Mk IV!), "World War I in photographs", "Armoured Fighting Vehicles of World War One, Volume 1", "Tanks and Trenches", and photos from the AWM and other locations on the net.


The guide is in A4 format but should print out OK on any sized paper.


P.S.: You will need Adobe Reader to open the file.

I'll assume you've got Adobe Reader (everyone does!). Don't understand why you'd get an error message unless it's the paper size. It was sized for A4 which is what we use here but I think you guys in the US use Letter. Anyways, here it is in doc form.


P.S.: Just remembered that Tim is in the US. I really don't know why you can't open the pdf, Tread. What is the error message you get?

Just thought I'd post something I noticed when comparing various shots of Mk II's. The strip is composed of:



  1. Tank 787 from this site.

  2. Tank C21 from British Mark I Tank 1916 by David Fletcher.

  3. C21 again from Tanks and Trenches by David Fletcher.

  4. C21 & C26 from Armoured Fighting Vehicles of World War One Volume 1 edited by Duncan Crow.

These 4 shots look to have been taken in sequence (check the trench edges in the first two photos) as the tanks passed by the photgrapher. Does anyone know for certain whether C26 was tank no. 787?


BTW the distortion in the last image is due to bad size judging eyeballing technique by me and not poor print quality!

Mark, what gun is that on the mk.II female? Looks more like the ones that were fitted on Mk.IV females.

Hi Eugene,


It is the same type of gun. The Lewis gun was installed on the Mk II's and surviving Mk I's for Arras, as well as being the machine gun for the early Mk IV's. It replaced both the Vickers and the Hotchkiss.


Thanks for the comment about the guide. It's coming along as work permits.

Hi all,


Here's a bit more. I've finished the section on the Mk I, II, & III. Some corrections and additions to the Mk I section and still checking the rest as I go. The drawings and the rest of the guide will take some time for 2 reasons: 1) I need to visit the AWM to measure their Mk IV and check their photos, and 2) I haven't done any tech drawing for over 20 years. The cab front comparison is still not to scale but does clearly show the differences between the early Mk's. I'm posting both in pdf and doc. Ignore the page numbers at the bottom; once this is all cleared up they'll match.

P.S.: Please feel free to email me or post any mistakes you find in the guide. Also, any photos of any British heavies Mk I - V** are very welcome. It'll make my job much easier.
