Does anyone know which railway route the tanks produced at the Armstrong Whitworth works in Newcastle would have taken once built? Any photos showing them in transport from AW's South would be great
Also interested when they first started to make the Mk IV and how many etc (and if there are any survivors of AW built Mk IV or Mk V's)
In theory it would be possible to find it from the routing records if they exist - a chap did that very impressively for some of the Scottish tank bank tours recently, if I recall rightly. But he had known dates to begin with, which I suspect would help. And only one or two railway companies to deal with! Those were the days, of course, before the railway companies were amalgamated into four in 1923 or so.
The questions are (a) how important were the fractional differences in loading gauge between companies and routes and (b) the route through or past London to the tank acceptance depot and thence to Bovington or Richborough. which would involve several different companies at a guess. Not easy.
It will be very interesting if anyone can answer this!
Armstrong Whitworth built 100 Mark IV Males. They did not build Mark Vs. The Mark IV preserved in Brussels is an Armstrong Whitworth machine. Some early production AW Mark IVs were at Cambrai, so they certainly started to make them before that. Production continued (apparently very slowly) until Setember or even October 1918.
I was interested to read your comments above about a chap that looked at the routing records to establish the Scottish tank tours. Do you have further info on this? Who was it and can his work be accessed?
This was essentially a popular piece but very good for the length and with some great pics. I haven't checked recently to see if he has published any more.
I have no more information that I can give you, but you can always ask the local secretary of the relevant branch of the WFA to forward your email details to Mr Ross and ask him to reply (I don't expect he'd give out Mr Ross's personal details to you, as a matter of routine policy those days).
