306th US Tank Brigade
Permalink

Greetings!  I am seeking information on this unit.  It is frustrating because the battalion & brigade designations identifying tank units changed.

I have a document dated 16 March 1919 authorizing a number of men from this unit the right to wear a gold chevron on their sleeve for 6 months service in theater.

One of these men is my Great Uncle Connel J. McGill 456459 who arrived in Liverpool August 28th 1918.

I am looking for information about their equipment (FT 17s or British Marks?) and whether or not they saw action.  As far as I know they were not in combat but I'd appreciate any leads on the activities of the 306th.

Thanks in advance,

Skirmisher

Acc to Richard L Dinardi: The 331st Tank Battalion (organized into the 306th Tank Brigade) first saw action in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive (as part of V Corps) in November. Hope that's a start. P.S. Renault FT.

Actually, the 331st Bn was just one unit of the 306th Tank Brigade (originally designated the 3rd Provisional Tank Brigade), a First Army formation.

When it was redesignated as the 306th Tank Brigade on November 5, 1918, the units that were in it included:

306th Heavy Tank Bn.
331th Light Tank Bn.
345th Light Tank Bn.
316th Repair and Salvage Co.

The Brigade returned to the U.S. in March 1919 and demobilized at Camp Meade the following September.

Yes, in Europe they operated Renault FTs and were in combat. When they returned to the States, they continued training with M1917s.

Can you post a copy of the order authorizing the Overseas Seas Service chevron?

Treat 'em rough!

John
