Little Willie Scale 1/10 RC
Permalink

Hi folks,

I started my buildt of Little Willie in scale 1/10. After spending some time on CAD drawings, I started the first try with producing

some parts on my CNC milling machine today. The plan is, to buildt a prototype in plastic, before I will start producing this Willie thing in metal.

It should become a fully functionable rc tank with sound and smoke generator.

Here are the first photos ... wink

You have to love modern technology! It looks like this is going to be a loverly model, can't wait to see this build progress.

Is there going to be a Turret?

Helen, I have been grown up with modern technology wink .

I will build up little Wilhelm without a turret for now...maybe later on I will try. Thanks god I have enough rivets ... by the way, that was the main reason, to build WW1 tanks.

I got some rivets, around 128.476 ... expected, so I had to build a tank around them ... ...or some more (tanks)

Arrr, yes. Love for rivets is essential... biggrin

Yet another build which I will have to follow closely!

Best regards,

...two more pieces produced, and glued almost together ... looks a little bit like Little Willie now, but I found my first mistakes, who need to be fixed in CAD now.

...after Fixing some mistakes, I have been milling another set of plastic parts, and glued them together. What I can say now: I´ve got another couple of hours experiance

to handle my millig machine ...still some mistakes who need to be fixed in CAD... have to move some rivets, cut the front and rear sideplates ...no big deal, so the

next set should be ok. If everything fits, I will start milling theses parts in aluminium.

128.476 rivets...... expected

...that´s for today ... I´m waiting for another sheet (2mx1m) of plastic

It looks great! Are those real rivets you use?

And may I ask, on which information did you base your CAD model?

Best regards,
Thorsten

...yes, that's real rivets, normally used for an Airbus A320 wink

I based my CAD model on drawings, photos and a paper model kit .

Today I milled the side plates from the track bodies. My tracks are 2mm too wide, but if you don't tell anybody, nobody will

recognize  .....biggrin ...I definitive will use them.

...together with my old project of a Mark IV ... smile

And this is my playground after working time ...with underfloor heating biggrin

...the show will go on...

Volker

Looks very interesting, Volker. One small thing though - the tracks go on the other way around, with the raised cleat at the trailing edge.

Perhaps done on purpose, to see if people were paying attention. ( btw, the tracks are 2mm out - LOL!! )

Great work, and fantastic workshop/den, whatever........underfloor heating, now thats just too good.

look forward to seeing the next installment.

Hi,

some more photos. The track bodies are redesigned, and I found some roller chains which I can use as drive chains.

Hi Volker,

Probably the cleanest Work Shop I have ever seen! :) Although it does need a 3D Printer for quick prototyping.

I'm watching and learning. Going to give your idea for pressing the track a go on my own project, thank you for your help with that. x

...thank you Helen, you´re welcome.

wink I spent a lot money for that millig machine, so I have to save some for a 3D printer now. I have not a lot experiance

in these 3D things, so I have to learn it first. My milling machine is able to mill things in 3D but that also need these experiance.

At least I like to produce my models in metal, so it will be enough for the moment to know somebody whow can print some things, if

needed biggrin This Little Willie in plasic is only for practice on my machine, when I will start with milling metal sheets, this Willie will become

a nice flower pot ha ha ha

wow [gasps in amazement] wow
I want one.

is picture one (in the last group} reversed?
Or is the roof panle on upside down?
The radiator opening is on the wrong side.
It would be above the entry door in this position.
It should be on the right side of the vehicle.

Dave ... you´re right, the roof is laying upside down smile ...it´s still loose.

So what kind you want? In metal or plastic, static or RC ? During the next weeks, I will cut a set in aluminium, and do some rivet work. ...you will see it in this post.

I only have one set of tracks, so I have to think about a new way to buildt some more, before I start to sell them biggrin .

Hi Volker,

I'm curious how you made your track plates. Are there any photos of that process? I can only see you're most recent pictures in this thread; the rest are icons.

Brilliant work.

Cheers,

Michael

Hi Michael, ..thanks

the tracks I fabricated many years ago, when I worked in a laser shop. The pieces of one track part had been laser cut and laser welded from steel.  After I changed my job, I had no chance to fabricate them in the same way. Now I am thinking about a new way. ...maybe in aluminium, what I can cut with my CNC mill.

Most of the pics I posted before, are the same I posted new … first ones, where you see only an icon, are gone, because I changed my provider, so they are deleted from server.

I can put in some pics from the track fabrication tonight.

Hi Volker,

Pictures of the tracks would be great, as will any others you post. Modelling in metal is of particular interest to me.

Michael

Hi folks,

I will show you in this post, how I did the tracks form my Mark IV Project, what is frozen at the moment. So I will use the tracks from this project for the ”Little Willie”.

A couple of years ago I had the chance to work in a laser fabrication shop, where I could buildt some nice things.

I constructed a press form for the truck plates (0.8mm steel), and laser cut the pieces for the carrier plates from stainless steel. The carrier plates are welded also by laser.

The carrier plates are riveted together with the track plates by 8 rivets … like the original.

The ready tracks are bolt together with spring pins.

Riviting 8 rivets in once biggrin

Laser welded carrier

So good to see this model progressing again. It already looks amazing, can't wait to see it running.

I could never have made my own model without your explanation of how you made your tank track. Thank you x
