Does anyone have any information/images on how the sponson trailers used for the Mk I and Mk II Tanks were moved by rail? Would they have been on flat wagons like the Tanks, or possibly put in covered vehicles?

Cheers, Rob

Try railway books to do with WW1 and narrow gauge as well, as I saw some pictures of tanks and other equipment, but can't remember the names. You could also try the railway forums.

Hi Rob, as a railway and military modeller, I can honestly say that I have never seen a photograph of these sponson trailers actually being used, or transported by rail.

I would imagine, (if they were used and transported by rail), that they would be on a flat or low sided wagon, with a tarpaulin cover, similar to how the tanks were transported.

Hope this helps?

Grant

Best I can do is a few photos. My best guess would be that the sponsons would stay on their trolly until needed, so I would agree with Grant. I did read somewhere of sponsons getting mixed up, resulting in a lot of hard work tweaking them to fit.

Tanks being recovered it say on this AWM Photo, but there does appear to be sponsons on the rear wagon and the one on the left maybe as well.

I spoke to a man at Bovinton tank museum and he said in the early mark 1 days they had to take off the sponsons and put them on later. This was a pain and took ages to put them back on the tanks so they design them later to side back into the main body for transporting. They put them on flat bed trucks like the tank I believe. they would have hid and covered them also as they where a top secret weapon in 1916. Paul
