Just a note to say that I was at Thiepval on July 2nd  (couldn't get tickets for the big one on the 1st - we were outbid on ebay by some people called William and Kate). Also visited Albert, Amiens, and the museum at Villers-Bretonneux. Photos of various things to follow.

The ceremony on the 1st was  televised in France and relayed to a hall in the centre of Amiens, where we watched it. There was commentary and analysis by French journalists, and, if I heard her correctly, a remarkable observation was made by one of them; the British actor Charles Dance read an item about the introduction of tanks, which prompted the anchor woman to explain that tanks were "a French idea, built by the British."
