MK IV tank - supply sledge adaption

What is this adaption on the back of this Mk IV? Is it for towing a supply sledge?

No. The tank you've pictured is Britannia, photographed in the USA so not a supply sledge in sight. I don't think the thick bar is an adaptation.

Thanks Gwyn. Yes indeed it is Britannia. However, other photos i have of Britannia don't appear to have that tube.

The first photo was taken at Camp Upton L.I. on 1st Feb 18.

 

This next photo was taken on 5th Avenue during the 5th Liberty Loan parade in April. So, why are they different?

I don't think it's a tube. I think it's an unditching spud hanging from the thin metal crosspiece by a chain.

Yes, you are probably right. I have not seen one like that before. Is that a locally made one for Britannia's demonstrations or have you seen similar ones elsewhere?

They were used before unditching beams were invented. They were ineffective.  Look to the left of this photo.
