A7V markings
Permalink

Greetings all. I need a couple of bits of information which I cannot find and hope you may be able to help me with regard to A7Vs.

Firstly; When did the cross style change from Balkan to Maltese type?

Secondly; which A7Vs carried Balkan crosses on the front and rear top gratings?  I know one of them had a '+' type cross across the complete top, was this a one-off?

Lastly. No.562 'HerKules'; what markings did this tank have on the rear and top?

Thanking you very much in advance,

Graham.

Thank you James. I now know the timescale, quite useful.

Do you happen to know if the crosses painted on the front & rear grills of the tanks was universal or was 'Hagen' the only one with them?

I see in the photographs on the net that the crosses painted on the front and back of the bodies were from none to two. Was there any reason for this or was it down to the whim of the painter?

 Many thanks again James.

 Graham.

To quote Hundleby & Strasheim (original 1990 book)

"the upper front louvre cross was used on 527 on June 1st, 1918 and it is considered that all had this marking from this time onwards"

Regards,

Charlie

Thank you very much Charlie. The reply sounds as if the grill crosses were carried on the front grill only. Is this correct?

I have painted four 1:32 scale Weston models A7Vs so far and have put the crosses on the front and back. If I am wrong I will be (for once!) in the lucky position to be able to remedy the faux pas easily.

I had made a template which I used for the crosses so either way it is not a problem.

James H; have a great time, for once you don't have to worry about getting back with information for me!

Update; I have just purchased 'the book' from a seller in Austria so in around 10 days I won't be such of a nuisance to you all....

 Thank you both, Graham.
