It appears to be a large wheeled engine of some sort. I have no images to provide, but I know how they work. It had a steam engine, which would turn the large wheel on top, which would turn and power whatever would be hooked up. I don't know why it would be used in the First World War, but perhaps it could be hooked up to an tractor for extra power. I do not know the specific model. I may be wrong on all of this though.

It looks like a steam engine to power something like a threshing machine. 

It may be derelict because the fire door is missing - this is usually always kept closed on steam engines to reduce condensation in the fire box.

The engine itself looks like a piston valve engine - the larger circular cover seems to be the cylinder head and the smaller one the cover for the

piston valve. You can see the top of the governor on the left hand side of the engine.

The large wheel usually drove a large belt to whatever machine was being used - most often a threshing machine.
