Strange tracks on a Mk V.

This is 9046 Bandit II with what appears to be French cavalry. It seems to have spuds fitted to every track link. Is this a new thing?

I wonder if it was an experiment by Central Workshops in France. The blocks look like they made of wood. I recall that Johnson's 

snake track had wooden inserts in the track elements - this could have been a step towards the snake track.

I could be wrong but they look a lot like the type carried by Whippet tanks?

Has anyone else noticed "new and improved" seems to mean it doesn't work as well as it used to?
