FT armour nut and bolt size

Any one know the nut and bolt size that bolts the armour plate together on the FT tank. It seems everything is bolted not riveted with the nuts inside the vehicle and the bolts coned to accept a spanner for assembly outside.

I thought the armour plates on a Renault FT were riveted to the frame. I believe the conical style of rivets are used for extra strength

in the rivets. I can't see any flats on the fastenings on the outside of an FT.

Bonjour,

Armor plates are bolted and not riveted.

Conical bolts are on outside of the tank.

These conical bolts are also used on Saint Chamond and Schneider tanks

If you look at the pictures inside the Renault you will see that the majority of the rivets are secured with nuts. The coned rivet bolts have two flats on the edge which can be held with a spanner to tighten the nut inside. Not sure of the bolt nut diameter is either 12mm or 16mm.

Looking at the last photo of the underside of the FT, it looks very thin, is the floor plates 6mm. From the interior of the FT you can see the other side of the coned rivets which are nearly all bolts.

Because there are very few places that can still hot rivet a technique restorers use is to use a bolt and die grind the head

to something approximating a rivet head. I think you'd have to find an original tank which hasn't been restored to determine

whether Renault used bolts. I suspect they didn't since riveting is much cheaper than using bolts and nuts.

Do you know the size of the bolts used, they look like 16mm sized bolt.
