Renault FT(s) in Mali
Permalink

A few sources refer to their being one or two surviving FTs in Mali, but nothing very detailed, as far as I can see.

Unfortunately, this source has also now disappeared: https://landships.activeboard.com/t51434725/renault-fts-in-morocco-by-tank-commander/

Equally unfortunately, and annoyingly, I can't remember much about it now, but Pzkpfw-e said at the time, "I was wondering how one came to be in Mali."

Unless http://home.comcast.net/~dapena/tanks/cipri.htm reappears, we have lost an excellent source.

However, I chanced upon a couple of photos supposedly taken in Mali in 2008:

One assumes the man on the right is from the Mali military. Can't identify the other fellow.

The vehicle clearly wasn't a runner:

This looks as if it's being examined, perhaps with a view to restoration.

Other than that, I have no more details, just a suggestion that it or they might have been used to intimidate the locals during the inter-war period. Perhaps Pzkpfw-e remembers or has downloaded some info from the original post.

Any help forthcoming?

There’s a thread on Maple Leaf Up with this photos.
www.mapleleafup.net/forums/showthread.php
It says two were sent there in its days of being a French colonial possession, to impress the natives.

"The Shadock" has a pdf list of all the surviving Renault FT. You can find their list by using "shadock renault ft" in a Google search, and I have the direct link here:

Shadock's list of surviving Renault FT

One Mali FT is in the list but with no information, only a link to the Maple Leaf Up thread.
