I finally found a good copy of "A Company, 301st Tank Battalion ~ Treat'em Rough". The photos are pretty interesting, and I'll get down to scanning what I can over the next few weeks. There's a picture of both sides of a ditched Mk.V Hermaphrodite which is pretty interesting.
There are some other photos of Mk.V*s as well in a tank park ~ with unditching rails. Could someone chime in as to whether the unditching rails were removed for use in France on the Mk.V's as they weren't considered necessary on Mk.V*s???
I know there was a question as to whether the 301st painted the front horns red-white-blue, but it doesn't appear so - even though I know that the orthographic film does render colors differently than pancromatic film.

In general unditching rails were used on Mk V*s, their extra length gave them better trench crossing but they could still ditch in boggy going etc. If you think about it Mk V* rails would need to be modified (shortened) to fit a Mk V.
