1/35 K-WAGEN
Permalink

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to share my recent design work on K-WAGEN model in 1/35 scale. The 3D model is nearly completed and test printing started. From just few parts I can see how massive this model will be.

All the design work is based on the information I have found and studied over last few months. Obviously, as you may guess there is nothing more than just few old photos from the factory, where two of them have been built and some sketches of the prototypes. As there are few speculations, I have decided to recreate the model from the sketches which I think are the closest to the tanks shown on the photos from the factory which I'm attaching below. Also few renders of the model. Once I have some bigger sections of the prints I will post the photos as well.

Hi there,

A little progress on assembly of parts. Left sponson glued tos fit well so far. gether. All parts fit well so far. Also test print few tracks, hatches and commader cupola. Tracks looks good. I'm really pleased with them. Now I'm going to print big parts of main hull. But these will take quite long to finish, so next update in few days.

Hello again,

After few hours of printing, the tracks are coming well together. Big parts to form a main hull are still printing.

The K-Wagen is slowly growing. Several larger elements have come out of the printer and are beginning to take shape. So far, everything fits quite well.

Afternoon,

After a few years of lurking I suppose it is time I share my thoughts starting here.
I think it was only a matter of time before someone tackled this one with the advancements of 3D printing.

Out of curiosity, as I myself own the 1/35th scale kit from KORA Models, did you happen to cross reference it with your outcome/guess on it's size?
I have yet to assemble mine as I have become more of a collector rather than a builder, for the time being. The cast quality on it is horrible, at least on mine.

Highly interested to see where the project goes. Perhaps a little early, but do you have any plans on publishing the 3D plans in one way or another?
I am always looking to one up existing models/kits in my collection and on a tank this big the more accurate the base shape the better.

It is really enjoyable to see how you made the tracks from so many parts based on so little information available.
Looking forward to see more progress as it goes.

Hi All,

It's been a while (quite a long while), but I kept putting this project aside and coming back to it over and over, nearly giving up until I found a solution to the problem I encountered. Printing such large components is very challenging, and I wasn't happy with the results. Most of the parts were twisted, bent, and dimensionally far from perfect. After exploring different approaches to 3D printing, I worked out the best way to support the prints so they don't deflect during the printing process. Therefore, I'm happy to announce that the project is alive again, and I have made some progress already, starting with the main hull floor. All parts fit well, everything is straight, and it’s promising to achieve a nicely finished model.

Regarding your questions, Compineer, I worked out the sizes from the prototype sketches I found and general information posted on Tank Encyclopedia [LINK]. The overall dimensions of the tank are 371mm long, 183mm wide, and 86mm high (without the commander's turret).

I agree that the KORA K-Wagen resin casts are not of great quality, and I thought it would be good to release my model once it is ready. However, this may take a few weeks as I am still tweaking the parts and doing test prints.

Keep up the amazing work, it is unbelievable what can be done with modern technology. Thanks for taking the time to post your work here on the site, I know that can be a chore amongst itself at times.

Some years ago, this one was at the top of my agenda. It ultimately failed due to the fact, that I am not wanted to build a «what if» vehicle. So I would have preferred to build it in the construction stage as to be seen on the very few (and blurry) pictures. This would have been too difficult… You may see: a lot of would/should/could!

The more I like your attempt. Very, very interesting! And this will become a huge vehicle. Keep up your good work!

After a detailed study of your pictures, allowe me one question: The so called "Rollenwagen" or roller carriage for the track plates were connected by a anchor chain of 26 meters each. Is it, what I believe to make out in your track construction, just simplified for production reasons? Here a rough sketch for clarification and the sprockets on the original:
