After checking a multitude of photos of female Mk IV's and V's and comparing them with some excellent photos taken by Mandrake and posted in the Flirt II (MKIV Female) Walkaround thread, I have come to the conclusion that when it was being refurbished "Flirt" has had it's sponsons put on backwards!

The female sponsons are not identical port and starboard. The main difference between whether a sponson is a port or starboard sponson is the rivet/bolt pattern. In the middle of the sponson, there is a riveted/bolted strip that allowed the sponson to be folded into the tank. On the forward part of the strip there are normally seven rivets/bolts and five on the rear edge. I've posted a picture to make the difference clearer.

Nice spotting, Mark, as usual. I suspect you have caused numerous retrospective glances at photos and models (and a few topologically-induced headaches!) Excepting this central 7 rivet/5 bolt strip, the port and starboard sponsons are not mirror images, and have vision slits and pistol ports located to accommodate right-handed gunners serving on different sides of the tank. Have you noticed any other features which make the port and starboard sponsons non-identical?

Only the division at the top of the sponson which rarely shows up in photos. I'm hoping to be able to get a few shots of this feature on the AWM Mk IV. I did notice the pistol port and vision slit difference and oddly enough it was that feature that first caused me to check "Flirt" against other photos.

I'm not sure whether this is the same on Mk III female sponsons. The few photos I have seen seem to show that the Mk III sponsons were the same port and starboard. I pointed out in Mark III males some differences between the Mk III female sponson and the Mk IV sponson and missed one fairly distinctive difference. The Mk III has clevises on the front and back of the sponson where the Mk IV does not.
