French tracked, armed and armoured vehicle 1915?
Permalink Closed

I have found a reference to a machine gun armoured vehicle designed and built by a M. Pretot (as a development of an idea by M. Breton) based on a Bajac Tractor in 1915. It seems that Messieurs Breton and Pretot then substituted tracks for the wheels of this vehicle but failed to gain any interest from the French military authorities. Breton and Pretot certainly existed and Pretot produced a remote controlled tracked demolition machine (so he had knowledge of the use of tracks). Bajac tractors also existed. The story therefore is at least plausible. If true this vehicle would have a claim to being a 'first tank'. However in this case it is surprising that I can find no French claims to this effect ( I even found one very nationalistic French history of the tank that completely ignores any developements at Lincoln or actions at Fleurs and proclaims the Schneider as the world's first tank and the first to see action! So one would expect any such development to have been proclaimed by some devotee of M. Chauvan).

Can anyone throw any light on the possble existence of such a vehicle?

Hello Centurion

Very Interesting, I have been studying Breton & Pretot and there Barbared wire cutting apparatus, And by chance I have located some very interesting material on the subject, But what I am in need of is a photo , preferably of the side of a Bajac tractor, can you or any one out there help with this?

But of course any photo's of the Bajac and or the B&P Apparatus would be very much appreciated.

All the Best

PS, I have located information on this subject of this post as well, B & P never built the Bajac as a tank, But they did fit it with a pair of tracks.

I can find no photo but a mention that the machine gun vehicle was based on a combine harvester design with some form of bladed rotating devices - presumably to literally mow down the opposition! It would be before the dates covered in the book that theburk has located though.
