Large flamethrowers in WW1
Permalink

Hi All,

I'm looking for info (drawings, photographs - with the modeler in mind for a scratch in 1/72 scale) about large flamethrowers (Allied and German) used in WW1.

I've some infos about the British "Livens Large Gallery" flamethrower in an old (1996) magazine about military history, but I don't know if scale drawings are known to exist ?

I've read that the Livens flamethrower was installed in a trench before action, but I was unable to find a photograph of this particular device in situation.

Did the Germans had a similar large flamethrower device ?

Thanks for the info !

I have the enclosed which is allegedly a British heavy flamethrower in operation. I have no other ifo on the photo. Its possible it could be a Livens flame thrower.

BTW the Livens devices shown in some of the links in earlier posting are Gas projectors and not flamethrowers

I don't have this book (I'm planning to buy it in the near future), but looks like it is very good: http://www.schifferbooks.com/newschiffer/book_template.php?isbn=9780764335266

Tankcommander's photo is of the Livens Large Gallery flamethrower, which was the subject of a documentary on Channel 4 TV last year: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/7697251/Secret-terror-weapon-of-the-Somme-battle-discovered.html

Clips of the doco have, unfortunately, been removed from Youtube for copyright reasons. Interesting that Marienwagen should have an article on it from 1996.
