Leachman's desert Rolls Royces
Permalink

Lt Col Gerald Leachman was in command of British Middle Eastern Desert Operations in WW1. His area of command covered  the Estern deserts of what is today Iraq, modern day Saudi and Syria. In fact from Karbala to Jeddah (T E Lawrence was under his command, although one would never know it from Lawrence's own account). It was in fact Leachman who engineered the Arab rising against the Ottoman empire (he had been in contact with the House of Saud as early as 1911). In the desert Leachman used a number of vehicles. Two of these were armoured cars and I attach shots of two of these - Avenger and Silver Dart. Silver Dart's driver was an American lance corporal. I also enclose one of Leachman himself in Arab costume - not as glam as Lawrence all in white but much truer to Arab life at the time (go to Huf Huf today, especial on Camel market day and you'll still see lots of guys like this.)
