Hi Steve, oh and welcome!

I'm glad the plans are proving useful, anything you are unsure of just ask. I always seem to find something new when hunting for an answer to someone's question.

May I ask what you're building? Upgrading a kit or a scratch build?

Hi Jeff,

I'm in the final stages of my own 1/6 Tank build, so should be more than able and willing to give a hand.

My MK1 Tank should be up and running at the Southern Model Show next weekend. The Sunday 13th Sept in Headcorn. I will try and get some good photos and some video uploaded.

Let's hope that Takom used your plans when making their model to ensure absolute accuracy!!!!

Nope! although I have a feeling that I may have talked with one of their guys at some point. They've made a real good job of it and the only errors I have seen so far are tiny and easily rectified. Can't wait to see a few of these built up on here.

Hello!
Can anyone help?
Are there any known dimensions of 57 mm gun barrel for Mk1?

Hi, I've never managed to find a good reliable set of measurements for the gun on the MK1. One image I have which is similar to yours at least has a few and the height from the floor is a few inches longer than the barrel length.

That drawing is a different gun - it's a 3 Pounder (47mm) early Hotchkiss mounted on a French Naval mounting. The odd looking mounting was in fact

a set of spring steel struts designed to absorb some of the recoil. The later 3 Pounder had a pair of recoil/recuperator cylinders beside the barrel.

The gun you want is a Hotchkiss 6 Pounder (57mm) - I've looked for drawings of this gun unsuccessfully. There aren't a lot of survivors even though

the gun was in service in large numbers for a long time.

Regards,

Charlie

Oops! doh Sorry about that, I don't actually have much on the gun in the MK1 and grabbed that image earlier when I saw some measurements on it.  My Bad!

When working out my plans I used the bore size to work out in photos the overall diameter, without true measurements I knew it would give me something close. The length of the barrel I again went by comparison between the barrel and side panels that I actually did know all the measurements for. Again it meant I couldn't be totally accurate but near enough for a scaled down model.

I'm sure there is a 6pdr in the Dockyard Museum, if not ar Fort Nelson up on the hill here in Portsmouth... I really should go look.

Hi Helen.
Thank you for putting the plans on this forum. I'm hoping to have ago and build a 1/16 version that I can radio control to go with my other 1/16 tanks.
I'm hoping to find someone who can possibly 3D print the tracks ( they look to be the biggest challenge). I've just been to a local Model engineering show and got talking to a guy demonstrating one of these printers, It seems just about anything can be printed now.
Thank you Denzil

Superb Work Helen, Currently working on a Mk.I Male and Female(Takom) detail seems so very close to your work, with the exception of the Cabin which is a Mk.IV, I found and used the MR Modellbau Male and Female Mk.I correction sets

Hi Guys, Thanks for the kind words, sorry I've not been around on here much this last year.

Hi John, Despite it's 'issues' the Takom kit is a loverly piece of modelling. Around ten years ago now I started researching the MK1 Tank as I was pretty saddened at the accuracy of the plans available. I had been to Bovington Museum with some friends and the real thing was not what I had seen in the drawings back then.

So it's actually a good thing that we now argue/discuss the detail errors on a selection of fantastic models all these years later. The MK1 Tank deserved better than it was getting back then.

Have fun with the kit. If there's anything you'd like to know then there's a huge amount of information on the Landships Site and some great Members to.

Helen x

I'm slowly pricing my life back together right now and with a good push and a bit of luck I should finish off the 1/16 3D Printed Model to be made available on Shapeways.

World War 1 has always been a neglected area for Armour modellers up until the 100th Anniversary it seems, early on it was the Airfix offerings followed by Emhar, but nothing in the larger scales in plastic, Still waiting for the Little Willie in 1/35, but I may have to settle for the Accurate Armour one. But this is a time to rejoice from what we are getting.

You could always do what one of the guys in AMMS Sydney is doing - using Dave's Winfield's 1/18 cardmodel Little Willie as a pattern for a 1/35 scratchbuilt

plastic Little Willie. No images yet unfortunately.

Regards,

Charlie

Hi Helen, just a few questions, from an Airfix Mk1 builder. What colour would the interior have been painted or was it just left metal colour, also what would the radiator unit look like at the very back of the tank.

Hi Bill,

As far as I know they painted the in grey all over inside & out, then applied white paint inside for better visibility in the low light of a closed down tank. If the white was rubbed or thinly painted I would guess you could get what would look like a pale blue/white colour.

The grey was a light blue/grey colour which then had the camouflage painted over the top, with some of the grey still showing as part of the scheme.

Unfortunately I don't have access to my photos at the moment but a search for interior photos of Bovington's MKII would be a good place to start for radiator information.

Hope that helps

Helen x

Thanks very much Helen, that helps a lot. Really finding your information useful. Compared with some of your posters my effort is quite small, the Airfix Mk1, but I have tried to do an interior, even gave it a driver and commander (from an old Airfix De Havilland Heron, the size looked right) and an approximation of the engine.
My next trial is to work out where to put the steering cables, but I'll get there.

Hi, glad you're finding this site useful, there is a lot of good information hiding away in many years of posts on here.

There are a few good posts on tail wheels here... Improving the Aifix MK1 Tail and here... MB MK1 and... steering

Have fun with the modelling
