The card models webpage doesn't seem to be working properly: when I click on any of the modeller's names, all that happens is that the name turns red - the drop-down menus do not appear. Has something changed, or is it just a glitch?

I just tried the Models section of the website with Chrome/Firefox and Safari browsers - seems to be working ok with these. I use Mac OS X 10.11 - unfortunately

I don't have a Windows machine in the house.

The menu on the models page is a vertical accordion driven by CSS - I'd try clearing out your local cache so you get a clean copy of the CSS files from the server.

Regards,

Charlie

Edit: sorry "clearing out your local cache" is "remove temporary internet files" in Microsoft speak.

A new cardmodel designer - Alexander Bondar from the Ukraine

Alexander has been releasing free 1:50 models of WW1 and Interwar subjects on Russian forums and has allowed Landships II to host his

models. I'll gradually put his models on Landships II over the next few weeks to avoid setting off a feeding frenzy among

the downloaders - I don't want to blow our monthly bandwidth allocation.

First model is a Hejaz Railway Armoured Railcar - for those with elephantine memories - there have been discussions about these

in the forum. They appear to have been constructed by German engineers from Ehrhardt armoured trucks to provide some level

of protection for trains on the Damascus - Medina railway line.

Regards,

Charlie

Another Alexander Bondar 1:50 model. This one is of the Ehrhardt Panzerkampfwagen M1906. This was a very early attempt by

Heinrich Ehrhardt to interest the German and/or Austro-Hungarian Armies in armoured vehicles. An initial proposal for an armoured

Ehrhardt truck was rejected but a similar vehicle with a 7.7cm high angle gun to attack balloons was built in prototype form. After some

initial interest the German Army eventually rejected the vehicle.

Charlie

I've been dribbling the Alexander Bondar models onto Landships II so I don't blow the bandwidth limits.

The bandwidth is holding up pretty well so here's another one - a 1:50 Rolls-Royce Mk.1 1920 Pattern armoured car.

Regards,

Charlie

Another Alexander Bondar model - this one is pretty obscure - the Dennis Armoured Car.

The Dennis armoured car was built in Hong Kong using the chassis of a Dennis truck about 1925 for the Hong Kong Volunteer force. It was funded by private donations and was used for policing and security until the Japanese invasion in 1941.

Charlie

Another Alexander Bondar model - this one is pretty mainstream - the Austin Series I Armoured Car.

48 Series I Austin armoured cars were ordered by the Russian Army in Sept 1914. After delivery and modification

they were deployed in the spring of 1915. The Austin is the classic Russian armoured car - two MG turrets immediately

behind the driver's cabin.

Charlie

New month - new bandwidth allocation...

New Alexander Bondar 1:50 cardmodel.

This subject is fairly obscure - a Filtz Armoured Tractor.

This was an armoured shell dropped onto a Filtz agricultural tractor and was one of the numerous 1915 French prototype vehicles

constructed to break through barbed wire entanglements. It was a failure since a wheeled vehicle couldn't cross the cratered landscape of

the front and its trench crossing capability was slight at best.

Charlie

New Section added to the website - 3D Print files.

In a similar way to the cardmodels it seems reasonable to offer free .stl files created for WW1 models.

(.stl are print files for 3D printers)

Arie Dijkhuis' Limber for the GB Modelli K16 gun is the first one.

I've had "issues" with .rar archives on Mac OS X and decided to go with the older but universal .zip archive format.

If everyone hates this idea I'll take it down but "one must move with the times..."

And... there's a new artillery article on the German 21cm Mörser M99.

Regards,

Charlie

I'll also write up the equivalent coastal defence howitzer - the Mortier G de 270 Mle 1889 since this was also used on the Western Front.

Charlie

Working on rewriting the article on the 155mm Mle 1877 gun so thought I'd pick that one up as well.

New article on the Japanese 20cm & 24cm Type 45 (1912) Howitzers

http://landships.info/landships/artillery_articles.html?load=artillery_articles/24cm_Type_45_Howitzer.html

Saw a reference to the 20cm Howitzer on a Russian website and decided to document the howitzers. There are two 24cm Type 45

howitzers at the Beijing Military Museum but hardly anyone seems to have taken images of them.

Charlie

New article on the Knox tractors on Landships II.

Home -> Softskin Articles -> France

Did you know there were two different Knox tractors made during WW1? The Model 35 - usually seen with a Schneider CD on a trailer and the

Model 36 which was optimised for artillery towing with a winch and sprung towing hook but no turntable on the rear deck.

There is also a new 1:50 cardmodel on the website of the Knox tractor/La Buire trailer by Sergey Kamotsky - this was in a bundle of WW1 models he designed but I hadn't

pulled it out of the bundle.

Regards,

Charlie

New article on the Holt 45 tractor on Landships II.

Holt 45s were in service with the US Army before the USA went to war in 1917 and they served until the Armistice.

They proved to be rugged and reliable and saw much service in France towing medium artillery pieces and in the logistics train.

New article on the Holt 2½-ton artillery tractor Model 1918.

Intended as a light tow vehicle for 75mm guns after a modest number were produced it was withdrawn because

of engine failures and unsatisfactory performance. A modified and improved version - the Model 1920 - was tested but never went into production.

Intended as the tow vehicle for heavy artillery, several hundred got to France before the Armistice and they were used to tow the 155mm GPF guns in US service.

New article on the Holt built Mark VII and Mark VIII Tractor Caissons.

Built in 1918 to answer criticisms of the purely towing tractors which were unable to carry men or ammunition. In effect the Mark VII was similar in conception to the  French Schneider CD Artillery Tractor. The Mark VIII was somewhat larger.

New article on the 20-ton Artillery Tractor (Holt 120 hp)

Announced in 1914 and commenced production in 1915 most of the Holt 120s made were taken up by the US Army. Nowhere near as successful as the 15-ton Holt 75 hp only about 700 Holt 120s were built.

New artillery article on the French Mortier de 370 Mle 1914 Filloux which were built in a rush in 1914-15 and saw heavy use until the early part of 1917.

Like the German heavy siege guns it became of declining usefulness as the war progressed.

New artillery article on the Austro-Hungarian 15cm Mörser M78 & M80.

These were bronze barrelled weapons and were obsolete by WW1. However, they proved to be useful on the Alpine front

where high angles of elevation and stable firing platforms were a priority over ease of transport and rate of fire.

New artillery article on the Russian 203mm Model 1892 Siege Gun. Developed from the 152.4mm 190 Pood Model 1877 fortress gun

the 8-inch "light" gun was produced in modest numbers around 1900-1906. It's short range meant they were mostly used as fortress guns.

In 1915 the Germans captured some of these guns and used them on the Western Front.

http://landships.info/landships/artillery_articles.html?load=artillery_articles/203mm_M1892.html

And there is a 1/72 model of this gun:

New artillery article - the Russian 152mm M1885 Field Mortar. This started out as a Krupp designed 152mm mortar but the Russians wanted a more mobile system than the Krupp platform mortar. It was produced by Obukhov and at Perm from 1887 to 1902 and wasn't removed from service until the 1920s.
