After reading several accounts of 301st Heavy Tank Bn officers "laying the tape" markings up to the starting line on September 29, 1918, I began to wonder just what this involved. Was it some sort of cloth tape line laid on the ground or was it on wire posts? How exactly did one "lay the...
Has anyone any info on the above. They were originally built for the Boer War,introduced in 1899 but served till the end of WW1. They were also called Bristol wagons.
Folks, ? I've been given the OK to run this notice by the site moderator.? I'm a military historian and have turned to producing translations of a wide variety of French military works.?? I have just completed the translation of a number of French histories of their armored units and operations in WWI...
There have been some posts in various topics questioning the fitting od track extensions to rhomboid tanks. Now, we all know that the extensions (doohickeys) could be fitted to Mk 2 tanks onwards but there has been a general acceptance that it was not possible to fit grousers/spuds/track extensio...
So far all the models of 18 pdr I've seen in 1/72 - 1/76 seem to be the first version - are there any of the later ones (particularly the loop / split trail ones)?
A large and impressive volume (400+ pages) from a Mr. Jack Alexander. Read it here. There's a lot of stuff on the contact between Holt and Hornsby, etc,and Chapter 5 covers 1914-18. Much that I hadn't read before, but, as always, not error-free. E.g. p274: at least he doesn't claim that Holts were buil...
If you are planning on building A13 then you would do well to look at the thread on the Mk1 tank - Grenade Canopy. This tank, like A17 was equipped with the extension to the rear. -- Edited by TeeELL on Thursday 3rd of April 2014 08:40:41 PM
Recently I finished my build of Roman Vasilyev's (der kampfflieger) Izorski-FIAT. The model is scaled to 1/72, but I printed mine at 150% to yield a 1/48 version. I did a lot of extra layering of hatches, wheels, etc for a better look in the larger scale. The original model has no markings, and looked a l...
For my sins, I was volunteered by my local modelling club to produce a list of WWI models for other members who didn't have any knowledge in this field. Three weeks later and some 500+ models listed, I tried to get a decent translation of an "A7V Überland Geländewagen". The "nearest&...
I note that the supply tanks only exist as a short section on Landships II. I think this topic should be expanded into a larger article since a supply tank model is an obvious modification to existing fighting tank models. It would be useful, I think, for modellers to have a decent resource of images fo...
Gents, without wanting to look like I'm speculating wildly out of my bottom, here is was happened when I visited Bovvy on 18/10/13... The Mk IV Male was out of bounds and being intently scrutinised/measured/recorded and photographed externally over every inch by four Japanese men in white coveral...
British Army LCP (Light Car Patrol) Ford Model T’s.British LCP units were based on the Ford Model T truck. I've got some of W^D's figures which are lovely - but I find it very difficult to attach the heads. I can get the superglue on the body fine...but trying to hold the head in place while it sets (or even to line it up before the adhesive goes off is something I'm finding really difficult). Any helpful (or at l...
This is, I think, a war trophy in Harriston, Ontario. But which war!? View Larger Map It's not in good shape, whatever it is. The trophy gun allocated to Harriston was serial 3598, but there is no detail about calibre or capture. -- Edited by PDA on Sunday 22nd of September 2013 02:30:18 AM
Not much to do with modelling, but I've noticed that in most accounts Swinton goes from Colonel to General in 2 years or so. By the time he visits Holt in 1918 he's billed as a full General. But I now read that he was only brevet (acting) colonel and was only made honorary Major-General in 1919. He doesn'...

Hi, As a wargamer, I have lobbied a couple of wargaming manufacturers about producing the Mark V "star" tank for 28mm scale to no avail. No one makes it in 28mm as far as I know and only Cromwell do it in 1/72. As I notice a few modelling companies contribute to this forum I just thought I would r...
I posted some info on the softskins forum, mentioned that I would put up some build photos of the master being produced for Resicast. It is planned (????) to have it ready with the 8" howitzer and limber for the MAFVA show at Duxford (!) George.
Last weekend, the Tanfield Railway held it's first Great War Weekend, with the Durham Pals living history group. Also in attendance were the 29th Field Kitchen, Royal British Legion, and Durham County Records Office. Tom Fryars also brought along his superb 1918 Crossley Tender, 1915/16 Phelon &...
This is outside the forum time frame but I'd like a translation of the markings on a Russian cannon captured during the Crimean War (1853-4) and given the Colony of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). The cannon is located at the Anglesea Barracks, Hobart. Regards, Charlie
